Baden - Chardonnay in Eichenfass Gereift Trocken 2019 - Durchbacher WG
This Chardonnay was a gift we received for Christmas, and it was a pleasing gift. This Chardonnay is interesting, it has a lot of character, and still holding its typical varietal expressions for an oaked Chardonnay.
Nose before swirling
At this stage, an intense vanilla aroma with lots of citric notes come to the nose. Also, some pears can be felt on the nose.
Nose after swirling
After swirling the glass, the main aromas are vanilla and tobacco, with some lime and pear aromas taking the backseat.
Taste in the mouth
In the mouth, citric tastes dominate the palate, with some elegant dashes of tobacco following them. Its low rest sugar highlights the acidic structure, even though it's a low acidity Chardonnay. This Wine has a smooth and creamy texture in the mouth due to a malolactic fermentation on oak casks. The finish has a medium length with a mineral taste.
After smell in the glass
Slight animal notes (due to its malolactic fermentation) with mineral aromas.
Conclusions:
This Chardonnay is solid. It's well done, being a good example of what a Chardonnay can be. However, it's also just under the upper limit of the prices we have set as our goal (under 9€).
This wine is a solid 3/5. It’s a good wine, full of character, though something to be expected from its price tag. If this Wine was worth 5€ per bottle, it would definitively be a 4/5.
