Monte Plogar - Gran Reserva 2014
This wine is a really good pick. One of my favourite Lidl pics. For an astonishing 2.60€ you get a really clean and well made Cariñena, that still has some aging capacity (1 or 2 years maximum).
Nose before swirling
In the glass, you can clearly smell strawberries, cranberries, and some faint vanilla notes. Its high alcohol content (14%) is clearly felt on the nose, something typical of Wines with this alcohol concentration.
Nose after swirling
In this stage, the fruit smells seems riper (showing its age and the quality of the grapes used), red fruits and the influence of the casks are clear. Though it seems that the casks have been already filled several times, only giving elegant aromas instead of the prime strength of a cask filled for the first time.
Taste in the mouth
The first thing we can feel once you have a sip in your mouth is its ripe smooth tannins and its relatively high acidity. It is clear that this Wine had a malolactic fermentation due to its creamy feel in the mouth. Another thing to note is how dry it is, since almost no residual sugar can be felt. The tasting experience at this stage is guided by its intense tobacco notes with some dashes of leather on the back. After swallowing, the aftertaste is really long and smooth, inviting you for a beefsteak or a smooth cheese.
After Smell in the glass
Once the glass is empty, the clear smell of a malolactic fermentation can be smelt, but all-in-all no mistakes can be found. This is a really clean wine.
Conclusions:
I still can't believe this wine is worth only 2,60€, It is well done, it still has most of the fruit aromas after 6 years, the wood is intense but elegant, and it has a really nice colour which is characteristic of its age. This wine is a clear example of a great wine sold for cheap. An absolute must-buy for every red wine enthusiast.
This is a solid 4/5
(1 = poor; 2 = acceptable; 3 = good; 4 = very good; 5 = outstanding)
