Barolo - Barolo D.O.C.G 2017 Trocken - A.VI.P.S.P.A
Today we are travelling to the northwest of Italy! To Piemont, more specifically, to Barolo. This well-known region produces red Wines to remember, with lots of complexity in the nose and palate, while giving us a surprisingly light colour in the glass. At a simple glance, you would think it's a Trollinger or a Pinot Noir… But an incredible surprise awaits those assumptions.
Nebbiolo -the exclusive grape variety that these wines are made of- is really intense. With lots of tannins and acidity, it will take your palate to overdrive!
Nose before swirling
Before swirling our glass, aromas reminiscent of sour cherries and paprika come to our noses. Another thing of relevance is that this Wine feels really warm on the nose (due to its relatively high alcohol content). And, in the end, some faint tobacco notes linger in our noses.
Nose after swirling
After swirling, the sour cherry notes intensify, and blueberries come to our senses. The previously faint tobacco gains importance, and the so typical spices and flowers from Nebbiolo also can be felt.
Taste in the mouth
Our first impression was an extremely positive one. Lots of well-ripened tannins, with an intense acidity that make our mouths salivate. The complexity of this Wine is evident at a simple glance, its dryness playing an exceptional game with all the tannins and acidity, giving it a long finish. Each time we swallow it, it feels really silky.
After Smell in the glass
On the empty glass, faint animal notes can be noted, which tells us this Wine had a malolactic fermentation during its production. Also, tobacco notes get particularly clear, telling us the Wine aged in barriques.
Conclusions:
All in all, this was a delightful Wine, with lots of complexity to be found. It's especially well paired with fatty dishes and grilled meat. Another great companion for this Wine is a book on a cool autumn day. Definitely, good value for your money. I myself will go to Aldi Süd tomorrow and buy some bottles to age in my cellar!
This is definitively a 4/5!
